We are Michael and Teenie Harcus and took over The Barn and campsite from Michael’s parents John and Isabell at the beginning of 2014. During that winter we renovated some of the dwelling houses at Chalmersquoy into two self catering. In Spring 2017 we are opening the renovated house as a high quality B&B house. This will have three en suite bedroom suites and provide a new kind of accommodation at Chalmersquoy.
Michael was brought up in Westray and farmed at Chalmersquoy until the year 2000. There was a lot of encouragement at that time to diversity so during the year 2000 we renovated the old Barn into hostel accommodation and sold the cattle and part of the land. Just prior to this Michael had started singing and touring throughout the UK so was home less – so the timing seemed right to sell the farm and concentrate on other things.
Michael’s parents tried to retire and wondered about selling The Barn – but during late 2014 Michael and Teenie had a change of heart and decided to take up the reins. Teenie left her job as Practice Manager at the local surgery and it is their aim to tour together to do singing during the winter months and run the accommodation during the summer months.
Michael and Teenie have two children, Hannah and Matthew, who also help at Chalmersquoy so it may be any one of the three generations who greets you on site.
